Star-gazing

Meteor Shower star-gazing

This was a great year for the Perseid Meteor Shower.  The Todds marveled at three spectacular meteors with sparkling tails, visible from their deck!  Evidently other neighbors were out sky-watching as well, because as those shooting stars fell, a great “whoop” went up from a nearby house!

Our neighborhood is lucky to have relatively dark skies, especially this close to the city, which makes it possible on a clear night to enjoy the stars, and even the Milky Way.  Be aware of how your lights shine out into surrounding areas.

Of course, lights for safe footing are wise, but generally, bright security lights don’t need to be on all night.  Dark Skies guidelines also recommend that lights be directed toward the ground, rather than up and out into a wide area.

The next Perseids shooting star display will peak around the night of Aug. 12 and before dawn on Aug.13, 2024. We hoped you enjoyed the sites!

Though the moon will be 50% illuminated at the time of the Perseids’ peak, it will set around midnight, so there will be dark skies until dawn — perfect for meteor hunting!
